frequently asked questions

What can I expect at the Bec Taylor School?

You can expect to form a very strong bond with your teacher through your private lessons, and a strong connection with your Bandmates in group lessons. We love nurturing each musician as an individual, so you can expect to be asked about your music tastes, favourite bands and your goals in music. At the Bec Taylor School, you will be given many contemporary-style performing and extra-curricular opportunities like gigs, songwriting tasks, curriculum challenges and creative activities. The more you put into your music education, the more you get out of it.

Should I do private or group lessons?

Research suggests that the best music education is achieved through a combination of private and group lessons that challenge and inspire students in supportive environments. While significantly different learning environments, private and group lessons offer important yet contrasting skills development. That is why we recommend doing both group and private lessons weekly together for the optimum musical development. However, if you can only do one class per week, it is up to you whether you do Bandmates (click for info) or private lessons (click for info).

What if I’ve never learned music before?

If you’ve never learned music before, congratulations for taking the leap and jumping right in, you won’t regret it. It’s totally OK to be a total beginner, make sure you tell your teacher and they will guide you on your unique music journey.

What if I am an adult learner?

We LOVE adult learners! We just love seeing people of all ages benefit from bringing music into their lives. Actually, adults are our fastest growing student group in the Bec Taylor School. We cater for both adult beginners, adults who have been playing for many years and adult students who learned music as a kid and want to get back into it. Whether it’s joining our popular Bandmates Heroes (22+), our Bandmates Icons (17-22yrs), or our Bandmates Vocal Group (22+), you will just love your little community of like-minded people learning in your small group together. Many of our adults do private lessons, or combine them with a Bandmates class.

What happens if I miss a class?

We are unable to accommodate makeup lessons for student absences, but we can provide an online Zoom lesson or lesson resources within your TeacherZone StudentApp if you cannot make the lesson.

Do I have to pay upfront?

You pay per month of lessons as you go. Payments are made via monthly direct debits on the first of the month, 11 months a year. As we don’t teach in January, there is no payment then. After you enrol, we will send you an email with a link to set up your direct debit payments. Simply set it up once, and payments will continue for however long you want, quit any time as long as you give us 14 days notice prior to the end of the month.

Where is The Bec Taylor School?

We are located on the top level of Dickson Chambers in the lovely Dickson Shops, right opposite the Post Office and upstairs from My Rainbow Dreams Cafe.

What time are lessons on?

Bandmates and our Lil’ Rockers/Groovers programs are in scheduled times based on our timetable. For your private lessons, you will be offered several time options with recommended teachers. Our lessons are usually (but not always) after 3.30 at the studio on weekdays or on Saturday mornings.
